Interdisciplinary Minors

PLAYWRITING

The Interdisciplinary Minor in Playwriting is designed to give students in Theater, Fiction Writing, and other fields represented at Columbia College a comprehensive and coherent opportunity to broaden their skills in writing for the stage and media performance modes. Students in this program will develop the requisite skills for both long and short forms of stage writing, for adaptation of fictional works to script forms, and for monologues for solo performers. The range of writing experiences will enhance the students' professional marketability in the related fields of stage and media advertising, public relations, and other fields where creative problem solving and script forms come into play.

Requirements:

The requirements for the Interdisciplinary Minor in Playwriting are as follows:

Playwriting 1 4 credit hours
Fiction 1 4 credit hours
Playwriting II 4 credit hours
Critical Reading and Writing: Drama and Story 4 credit hours
Electivies* 10 credit hours
  24 total credit hours

Electives may be chosen from the following Theater classes:

  • Acting I: Basic Skills
  • Improvisational Techniques for the Actor I
  • Text Analysis
  • Introduction to Design
  • New Plays Workshop
  • Creating Solo Performance
  • Neo-futurist Performance Workshop

Electives may be chosen from the following Fiction Writing classes:

  • Fiction Writing II
  • Story and Script
  • Story to Stage

Independent Studies may be taken as electives in either Theater or Fiction. Acting II: Collaborative Performance and Fiction II are highly recommended.


CREATIVE NONFICTION

The Fiction Writing, English, and Journalism; Departments' Interdisciplinary Minor in Creative Nonfiction offers students an exciting avenue to improve oral, written, and creative problem-solving skills as well as a means to enhance the development of their work in the arts and media majors at Columbia. The combination of analytical, research, poetic, fictional, and journalistic techniques used to produce creative nonfiction offers a powerful means of communicating more effectively in a wide range of arts and media-related writing. Students who possess strong creative nonfiction skills, along with a major interest in another field, increase their chances of competing successfully in the work world after graduation.

The minor core classes- in combination with electives from English, Fiction Writing, and Journalism- offer a significant complement to any student's work I the arts and media. The minor also promotes confidence, competence, and creativity in preparing for the wide array of nonfiction writing tasks to be encountered in and beyond Columbia. Finally, the minor will offer students the practical experience of working on, or attempting to publish in, one of the Departments' literary magazines: The Fiction Department's award-winning Hair Trigger , The English Department's new magazine, South Loop Review , that prints creative nonfiction and literary criticism, or the Journalism Department's arts and communication journal, Echo.

Creative Nonfiction II 3 credit hours
Fiction I 4 credit hours
Fiction II 4 credit hours
Prose Forms 4 credit hours
Electives* 6-8 credit hours
  24-26 total credit hours

  • Magazine Article Writing
  • Advanced Magazine Article Writing
