The Fiction Writing, English, and Journalism; Departments'
Interdisciplinary Minor in Creative Nonfiction offers students an
exciting avenue to improve oral, written, and creative problem-solving
skills as well as a means to enhance the development of their work
in the arts and media majors at Columbia. The combination of analytical,
research, poetic, fictional, and journalistic techniques used to
produce creative nonfiction offers a powerful means of communicating
more effectively in a wide range of arts and media-related writing.
Students who possess strong creative nonfiction skills, along with
a major interest in another field, increase their chances of competing
successfully in the work world after graduation.
The minor core classes- in combination with electives
from English, Fiction Writing, and Journalism- offer a significant
complement to any student's work I the arts and media. The minor
also promotes confidence, competence, and creativity in preparing
for the wide array of nonfiction writing tasks to be encountered
in and beyond Columbia. Finally, the minor will offer students the
practical experience of working on, or attempting to publish in,
one of the Departments' literary magazines: The Fiction Department's
award-winning Hair Trigger , The English Department's new
magazine, South Loop Review , that prints creative nonfiction
and literary criticism, or the Journalism Department's arts and
